How to help your teen become a safer driver

On Behalf of | Sep 17, 2021 | blog

As a parent, you worry about the day your teenager gets his or her license. Although your teen wants this increased freedom, you have concerns about your child’s safety since accidents involving teenagers are so common.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the risk of getting into a car accident is highest among drivers between the ages of 16 to 19. However, there are strategies you can implement to help your teenager stay safe on the road.

Give your teen opportunities to practice

Driving is like any other skill where the more you practice, the better you become. Drive with your teen in a variety of different situations so they can learn about how to manage different driving conditions, like driving in rain, at night, etc.

Lead by example

Your teenager likely looks to you as an example of how to drive and how to prevent accidents that lead to serious injuries. Set a good example by obeying the rules of the road, not using your cellphone when you drive and always wearing your seatbelt.

Set boundaries early on

Talk to your teenager about what boundaries to set regarding his or her driving. For example, you may want to limit nighttime driving or put a cap on the number of passengers your teenager can have in the car.

Maintain an open dialogue about your teen’s driving behavior and his or her driving privileges. If your teen resists any of your driving rules, talk to him or her about why you put these rules into place in the first place.
