How can I avoid road rage?

On Behalf of | May 19, 2019 | blog

Driving angry is never a good thing. Not only can it distract you from the task at hand, it can also result in dangerous altercations with you and other motorists. Knowing how to avoid road rage behaviors, both in yourself and when other drivers display them, will help keep you safe on the road. That’s why Geico offers the following tips to Houston motorists.

First, acquaint yourself with all that road rage involves. Maybe you’ve honked at another driver or made aggressive hand gestures. You might have also yelled, tailgated, stopped another vehicle from merging, or cut off another car. These are all examples of road rage and they can prove deadly in some situations. You may be stressed by rush hour traffic or under pressure because you’re late for an appointment. In any case, you must keep your emotions in check when behind the wheel.

There are a few methods for doing just that. While honking aggressively may feel cathartic at the moment, keep in mind it will only inflame tensions among other drivers. Tailgating is even worse, as you could experience a rear-end collision if the vehicle in front of you stops short. Also, don’t immediately assume another driver is ill-intentioned. The person could be lost or in the midst of a serious situation that you’re not aware of.

You should also know how to react when confronted with an aggressive driver. No matter what, never exit your vehicle. If you’re being threatened by a motorist, stay in your vehicle and phone the police right away. If a driver is tailgating you, change lanes and allow the car or truck to pass. If you feel you’re being followed by an aggressive driver, proceed to the nearest police station for assistance.
