How can employers prevent winter-related traffic crashes?

For many workers, driving is a part of daily life. Many employees drive to and from work each day, but some are also required to operate a vehicle as part of their job duties. Unfortunately, this can lead to motor vehicle collisions, which can be especially likely during the winter months in certain locations. While traffic accidents cannot always be prevented, there are a number of steps that employers can take to reduce the likelihood of one of their employees being involved in a traffic crash.

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, employers should have workers who are trained appropriately carry out regular inspections to ensure that all company vehicles are safe, which can reduce the possibility of a work-related traffic accident. Oil levels should always be maintained properly, along with engine systems, cooling systems, and electrical systems. Brakes and brake fluid levels should be inspected regularly, as well as tires and exhaust systems. Moreover, employers should include emergency kits in company vehicles, which are especially crucial during winter months. It is also important for all drivers to do their best to ensure that vehicles are maintained appropriately.

Winter-related accidents happen for any number of reasons. Some are caused by weather, from snow and ice to other hazards, but accidents also happen due to problems that drivers face throughout the year (drunk driving, reckless drivers, etc.). For workers who have been hurt in a winter-related traffic accident, or any other type of on-the-job incident, looking into workers’ comp might be very helpful.
